So I’ve gotten into Community, over the last few days I’ve gotten up-to-date on it. My take: I like it, I really do — but it’s not the sort of laugh out loud kind of show I was expecting. Not to say I don’t laugh, but the best jokes are more sporadic. I wouldn’t say it’s really missing anything, though. More than other sitcoms, I connect and deeply care about the characters, and I feel like I’m a part of their lives. That’s good writing. There is something wholly enjoyable about watching them.
Anyway, one thing kept tugging at me when I was watching. Whenever the Dean opened up and showed his vulnerability and his need to be loved by his students, something in my head connected him to another school administrator. Cinnamon J. Scudworth. Obviously you can say there are differences, but how different are then, REALLY? Scudworth is evil, but then the Dean is borderline racist, invades students’ privacy, sexually harasses Jeff, and is generally pretty self-centered. They’re both insecure — one feels like a child compared to City College, the other to John Stamos.
I think what I’m really trying to say is COMMUNITY NEEDS MR. BUTLERTRON
